Technical – An Introduction to Backstage

A beginner’s guide to lighting, sound, stage management and design.
This course is for all those who have ever wanted to know how things in the theatre work, and how to get the best from what’s available. We will look at techniques and styles of lighting, sound, onstage & offstage management and give students working skills to take away with them and apply in their own theatre situations. Bring a mag-lite if you have one and black clothing.

Students need not have any experience in this field, just willingness to give it a go.
A Technical T-Shirt is required and is available to Techies only for $25.

Martyn Roberts returns to NYDS after several years’ break. Now based at Otago University where he lectures Theatre Technology and Design, Martyn brings his extensive experience in theatre tech to a fun and instructive week.

Assistant Tutor: Todd Houston is one of the longest serving NYDS "loyalists", first as student in 1999, then as assistant, and as a full tutor in 2009. Now very busy in Australia with a wide range of technical projects, NYDS is delighted Todd is returning to work with Martyn Roberts.
