Advanced Acting

Master performance skills for stage and screen while preparing for tertiary auditions and professional careers. Work directly with scripts and narrative texts to elevate your craft, collaborate effectively with directors, and master practical techniques to deliver your best work under pressure. This rigorous class features intensive skill workshops and collaborative scene work with the Directing class. Note while the content will be beneficial for stage and screen work, there is no filmed output from this class.

Requirements: Prepare a new 2-minute monologue from theatre, film, television, or poetry prior to the start of the week. Additional pre-course material may be assigned.

Prerequisites: Designed for experienced actors aged 16 and over. Applicants must submit a CV of past performance experience or a letter of recommendation.

TUTOR: TAINUI TUKIWAHO

Tainui is an experienced theatre maker having worked professionally in te ao whakaari for the past 20 years. He began his career as an actor after graduating from Unitec. Using his skill as a foundation for storytelling, he progressed to directing and writing where – over the past 10 years – he has built a sizable resume.

Tainui observed a lack of Māori voices on our professional stages and quickly adopted and implemented a distinctive style and perspective representative of his cultural background. With this voice he has written, adapted and translated many plays, including Peter, Paka, Paratene, E kore a muri e hokia, Hoki Mai, Tama ma, Larger than life, Te Awarua and more recently the international sell-out festival show Black Ties.
