NYDS WEATHER RESPONSE

We are closely monitoring a severe weather system forecast to impact much of the North Island on Sunday, which may affect travel plans as students prepare to return home.

Weather conditions may:

  • Disrupt road travel (including flooding or closures)

  • Delay or cancel flights and public transport

  • Impact planned collection times

We are following advice from National Emergency Management Agency (Civil Defence) and MetService, and have contingency plans in place to ensure all students are safe and supported.

Sunday CANCELLATION

Given the extreme weather warnings, the NYDS Board and Management have decided that NYDS 2026 will now officially conclude on Saturday night, with no sharings, gatherings, classes or activities scheduled for Sunday 12 April.

Please note, in place of the NYDS Disco, we have scheduled our 3rd Sharing of Work. Finish time remains at 10:30pm.

We hope this gives you the time to make safe travel decisions.

What this means for Sunday

The Final Sharing of Work, originally scheduled for 10:00am on Sunday 12 April, will now take place on Saturday evening at Toitoi Arts & Events Centre.

The screening will begin immediately following the Gala Night, with the Sharing expected to conclude at approximately 10:30pm.

The NYDS Disco will no longer take place.

Additional Accommodation

We have secured backup accommodation at Hereworth School (the NYDS Hostel) for the night of Sunday 12 April, for any students affected by travel disruptions.

This additional accommodation will be free of charge, with full supervision and care provided. There will be a small cost for meals - we are working to keep this as low as possible and will share further details soon.

We are also working with our amazing local host families to confirm which hosts are able to accommodate their billets if need be.

PLEASE UPDATE US

If your plans may be affected, please let us know as soon as possible:

  • If you anticipate travel delays or disruptions

  • If your child’s flight has been cancelled

  • If your child may need accommodation on Sunday night

  • If any parents/caregivers wish to take their child home earlier than Sunday

This helps us ensure every student is safely accounted for.
